In what follows is the proposal for a schedule for the seven days in the desert and four days in Cairo. The information will be continuously updated on the website until the time of the project, inspired from concertation and discussion with participants. Spontaneity is also key to the success of the project, and there will be space and flexibility to accomodate for sudden change of plans.
The Western Desert: December 2nd to 10th (tentative dates)
The caravan’s campsite will change more or less every other night. Exploration of the space will take place during the day. The caravan will be outfitted with the will be technical facilities for enabling audio-visual projections.
December 2nd
Arrival in Egypt, Baharyia. A minibus will pick up participants from the airport and drive them to the Oasis of Baharyia.
Introductions, discussions.
December 3rd
Departure from Baharyia oasis to the desert.
December 4th
-evening: projections, visual and oral presentations and exchange. Participants are invited to bring and show their work and/or other documents, texts, footage, films, videos, etc. which they wish to introduce and share and/or discuss with others.
December 5th
Final stage of discussion and elaboration of collaborative projects.
December 6th
- evening: projections, visual and oral presentations, discussions.
December 7th, 8th and 9th
Execution of projects.
December 10th
Return to Cairo.
Cairo: December 10th to 14th, 2006
The working artists’ summit will be hosted by The Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art. Established in 1998, the Townhouse Gallery has steadily become one of Cairo’s premier venues for contemporary artistic expression and a landmark in the art scene of the region. It offers residencies, workshops, concerts, screenings, conferences, as well as programs for refugees, working children and street gangs.
December 10th
The artists will attend the opening of the Townhouse December 2006 program of exhibitions and conferences around the Maghreb Project following a 2 years research project with artists from the Southern an Northern Mediterranean who seek to develop a discursive and visual representation of the growing complexity of North African mobility in relationship to the European union.
December 12th
Artists will attend opening of the Cairo Biennale. This official event will bring more opportunities for the participants of Fenenin El-Rahhal to meet other Egyptian artists, as well as those hosted by the biennial.
December 13th
Simon N’jami will make a presentation of Africa Remix. The presentation will be followed by a roundtable discussion with some of the artists moderated by Simon N’jami, around Africa Remix and Fenenin El-Rahhal. |
